The University of Liverpool’s School of Life Sciences has launched a new MSc programme in Pharmacology and Toxicology for the coming academic year.

Led by researchers from the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, within the Institute of Systems, Molecular and Integrative Biology, the new MSc Pharmacology and Toxicology programme will provide students with an advanced understanding of the development of therapeutics, for applications in communicable and non-communicable diseases, as well as advanced therapeutics and complex medicines.

Students will be taught by internationally recognised experts in the fields of pharmacology, clinical pharmacology, toxicology and biocompatibility from both clinical and non-clinical departments. They will be provided with in-depth teaching on the processes underlying these areas, as well as the clinical and regulatory processes aligned to them, to provide a curriculum aimed at career development for those wishing to develop further in this ever evolving field.

The programme also includes practical training for research that can be applied to academic, commercial and healthcare settings. As well as in-depth scientific knowledge, students will gain digital, programming and informatics skills, which support a career in any branch of the life sciences, that are applicable to a range of career trajectories.

Programme Director Dr Neill Liptrott said: "The overarching mission of our department is to make medicines better, and make better medicines. Supported by our research in these areas, the new programme will provide students with the opportunity to learn more about these new therapeutics, as well as the processes that are required to bring them to clinical application. Additionally, through the research training component of the MSc, we will support the development of experimental design and practical skills, that we know potential employers value."

Professor Sonia Rocha, Executive Dean of the Institute of Systems, Molecular and Integrative Biology commented: "I am delighted that we can now offer the MSc in Pharmacology and Toxicology. Students will be able to learn from world experts in Pharmacology and have access to state of the art content and knowledge."

Applications are now open for the inaugural Autumn 2023 intake. Further information regarding the programme content, fees and entry requirements can be found on the MSc Pharmacology and Toxicology study page.
