Data science and child health inequalities

Description

We are excited to share this application for a 4-year PhD studentship based in the Division of Child Health, University of Liverpool, in conjunction with Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Liverpool, and Imperial College London. The studentship is funded by Health Data Research UK (HDRUK), and examines important issues around child health, with a particular focus on inequalities. The theme of this PhD is “ANTIBIOTICS IN YOUNG CHILDREN”.

In this PhD you will use large regional and national datasets to develop an in-depth understanding of (i) the patterns of antibiotic use in young children, (ii) the associations between early years antibiotic use and later child health outcomes especially the development of asthma and wheeze, and (iii) the impact that breastfeeding, maternal smoking, and other factors associated with socioeconomic status, have on these risks.

This PhD is suitable for postgraduates with a Masters degree in Data Science or Biostatistics, who are keen to develop skills in analysing large datasets, have excellent teamwork and communication skills, and are looking to pursue a career in Data Science, epidemiology, or other health-related research fields.

One exciting feature of the PhD is cross-institution supervision and mentorship from leading clinical academics and Data Scientists in other institutions especially Imperial College London, Queen’s University Belfast, and Swansea University. This will be part of the HDRUK Driver Program around Inflammation and Immunity, and we anticipate that this PhD will lead to important publications and international presentations.
