Making complex ideas simple: using different tools to explain your research impact

Friday, 17 May, 2024 - 12:00 PM

Format: Online Masterclass (60 minutes) - UoL & Sumy State University

Learn how to explain complicated concepts to a wider audience using metaphor and analogy.

Metaphors and analogies serve as powerful cognitive tools to simplify, clarify, and enhance the understanding of difficult concepts by leveraging our existing knowledge and experiences. They make complex ideas more accessible, relatable, and engaging, thereby improving the learning and comprehension process. Whether you are an early career researcher needing to explain concepts to ensure public engagement activities have full impact, a PGR student trying to help a family member understand what your PhD is about or any member of the academic community sharing your research expertise, using metaphors and analogies provides familiar and relatable frames of reference that can help individuals understand abstract or complex ideas by relating them to something they already know and understand. Learn how to do this in this practical and fun workshop.
