Philosopher in Residence

Researchers from the Department of Philosophy at the University of Liverpool are beginning a 12-month residence with NHS Research & Development North West (NHS R&D NW).

They will be helping to deliver an exciting programme of situated research through the professional development series “THINKING MATTERS”. The first event in this series, “Is there ever a right time to die?” will take place on 18 January 2019, at the Friends Meeting House in Liverpool.

The Philosophy Department team, consisting of Dr Panayiota Vassilopoulou, Dr Rachael Wiseman, and Professor Michael Hauskeller, commenced their residence on 1st November 2018. This residence builds on the Academic-in-Residence model pioneered by Dr Vassilopoulou with the Bluecoat Arts Centre in 2013.

The residency will be officially launched at an evening reception at the Bluecoat Arts Centre in Liverpool on 29 November 2018. The evening will include talks, a live musical performance from cellist Georgina Aasgaard, and a drinks reception when you will be able to get to know the residency team and find out more about this exciting venture.

The aim of the residency is to bring philosophical reasoning to some of the key agendas in health and social care by creating opportunities for questioning, critical discussion and rational argument.

Throughout the year there will be a series of events from small workshops to larger conference style days where healthcare professionals, health and care researchers, NHS managers and policy makers can connect with the philosophers. They will explore through rational investigation the truths and principles underpinning the NHS culture and the way it works both at an individual level and at a corporate level.
