The Department of Philosophy has appointed Dr Rebecca Davnall to a new lectureship in Philosophy and Games in preparation for the launch in September of the School of the Arts’ Game Design Studies programme.

Rebecca began her association with the department in 2005 as an undergraduate and has been here ever since, completing her PhD under Prof. Barry Dainton’s supervision in 2013. Her research centres on the metaphysics of experience and morality, and especially the application of these foundational concepts to the ethics of AI, robotics and other fast-developing technologies.

Since 2014, Rebecca has contributed extensively to the development of the new Game Design Studies course options, including four new modules, the first of which launched last September. These modules cover the relationships between play, art, labour and politics as manifest in the design and industrial conventions of the games industry.

In addition to her teaching, Rebecca co-hosts the podcast Dead Genre Chronicles, about the Japanese games industry, and is a regular on the LivWISE ‘What’s the Future…’ panel discussions.
