Masterclass Conducting course (Porto), April 2024 (application deadline 9 February 2023)

ATTENTION ALL CONDUCTORS

We have a conducting masterclass visit in Porto, Portugal planned for April.
Students are eligible for funding to support this activity provided their trip abroad is at least 5 days (includes the travel days).

If you are doing conducting, the University can pay the ‘passive participant’ fee for the course and provide some funding support towards the travel and accommodation. All eligible students will receive some financial support for accommodation; please note that the support is means tested, which means that additional support, including for travel, is given to WP students.

Eligibility:

  • The trip must be at least 5 days long (inclusive of travel days), which means you should stay in the host country for at least 4 nights.
  • Students should be doing conducting as part of their degree or they should make clear that they plan to do conducting in the future.
  • In order to receive funding support for accommodation or travel, students must be registered as Home students

Please note that the repertoire for the masterclass course relates to work studied on the Introduction to Conducting module MUSI200 in sem 2 2023-24, so observation during these sessions could be very useful to support your studies/assessment preparation.

Final call: To apply/secure your place, please complete the form by **Friday 9 February 2024**.

Note that if you are successful, you must be officially registered for the masterclass by March 2024.

As part of this trip, we have also arranged a session with the composer and jazz/classical pianist David Braid (www.davidbraid.com) in Povoa de Varzim; David would be happy to run a rhythm workshop (possibly on the beach, weather permitting!) or discuss his experience of training and leading musicians across a wide variety of genres: this would happen on the day after the masterclass; he can also spend individual time providing guidance to interested composers. If the David Braid session is something that interests you, please specify it on your application form.

Dates: 12, 13, 14 April for the conducting masterclass as ‘passive participant’

15 April (daytime only) for the optional workshop/sessions with David Braid (in Povoa de Varzim)

Travel date to Porto must be 11 April or earlier.

[FYI: There are currently flights available Manchester-Porto on 11th and from Porto-Manchester on the evening of 15th, returning just after midnight on 16th.]

Please be aware that Monday 15 April is the first day of teaching after the Easter break, so if there are classes on the Monday that you will miss because of travel, you should inform/check with the appropriate module convenors and catch up on anything missed.

!!! Assignment deadlines will not be adjusted for students on this trip; students are expected to manage their time and plan their preparation for assignments well in advance of advertised deadlines.

All students that have been funded on the trip will be required to complete a post-trip report.
