Preparing for success: MSc Project Management

Dr Jennifer Davies, Director of Studies, shares advice as you prepare for the start of your master's programme.

Jennifer DaviesCongratulations on securing a place on our MSc Project Management programme.

We are delighted that you have chosen to study with us and are looking forward to welcoming you to our thriving learning and research community at the University of Liverpool Management School (ULMS).

My name is Jennifer Davies and I am a Lecturer in Project Management and an alumna of the University having completed a BA in Popular Music, an MSc in Operations & Supply Chain Management, and a PhD in disruptive supply chain technologies.

My research focuses on the impact of Industry 4.0 technologies on creative industries and their supply chains, with a particular focus on supply chain sustainability.

Prior to joining the world of academia, I enjoyed a diverse career in the creative industries for 14 years, acquiring valuable project management skills and experiences in music and fashion.

I have been active in the Liverpool music scene for many years and my music has soundtracked a wide range of TV shows on Netflix, Amazon Prime, Sky TV, BBC, Channel 4 and ABC.

Additionally, I co-owned a luxury fashion brand that secured partnerships with prestigious retailers such as Selfridges and Harvey Nichols and catered to renowned figures like Rihanna and Lady Gaga.

You are about to embark on an exciting journey through the major theoretical and applied topics in the field of Project Management. We want to equip you with the principles you need to know as a future Project Manager, as well as the skills you will need to be effective in this role.

Core modules on this programme cover project and portfolio management, risk management, leading and managing teams, monitoring & controlling projects, and strategic purchasing. As well as these, you will have the opportunity to choose optional modules that could provide you with a core understanding of operations management, big data management and the ability to model & simulate complex problems which can plague project delivery.

Aside from your programme, a few more things you can look forward to taking part in, alongside your programme, are the ULMS ExECS award and the ‘We can work it out’ Master's Consultancy Challenge.

Through the ULMS Extracurricular Engagement, Careers, and Skills Award (ExECS) you can develop skills in the areas of careers and employability, personal development, networking practice, and take part in social and cultural activities. These are areas that ULMS believes will provide you with the skillset and knowledge needed to enhance your student experience.

The Master's Consultancy Challenge is open to all MSc Management School students across all disciplines. It is a fantastic opportunity to work with employers and gain experience of solving a real-world business strategic challenge. Companies that have taken part in previous years include PwC, Santander, Decathlon, Mando, Sysdoc and Chester Zoo. You can watch a short video about the consultancy challenge here.
