Preparing for success: MSc Human Resource Management

Dr Yaru Chen, Director of Studies, shares advice as you prepare for the start of your master's programme.

Yaru ChenCongratulations on securing a place on the MSc HRM master’s programme. On behalf of the entire programme team, I would like to welcome you.

My name is Dr Yaru Chen and I am a Senior Lecturer in the School's Work, Organisation and Management group.

My research interests lie in the field of public management and organisation studies and are informed by a number of theoretical perspectives, including professional identity, role identity, sensemaking and sense-giving. My recent work has focused on applying these theoretical lenses to explore the adoption and diffusion of innovation in healthcare organisations.

My advice for you, as you prepare to join us, is to be open to learning, be inquisitive and ask questions, take advantage of every opportunity provided to you and enjoy your experience.

We have an excellent lineup of professors, lecturers and tutors, who are passionate about what they do and are very much looking forward to engaging with you and providing you with the knowledge and skills relevant for you to excel as an HR professional. The bespoke nature of our CIPD-accredited HRM programme will enable you to make better decisions, act with confidence, perform at your peak, drive change in your organisation and progress in your chosen career.

A few things you can look forward to taking part in, alongside your programme, are the ULMS ExECS award and the ‘We can work it out’ Master's Consultancy Challenge.

Through the ULMS Extracurricular Engagement, Careers, and Skills Award (ExECS) you can develop skills in the areas of careers and employability, personal development, networking practice, and take part in social and cultural activities. These are areas that ULMS believes will provide you with the skillset and knowledge needed to enhance your student experience.

The Master's Consultancy Challenge is open to all MSc Management School students across all disciplines. It is a fantastic opportunity to work with employers and gain experience of solving a real-world business strategic challenge. Companies that have taken part in previous years include PwC, Santander, Decathlon, Mando, Sysdoc and Chester Zoo. You can watch a short video about the consultancy challenge here.

It is very important that you familiarise yourselves with the following online facilities:

Canvas

This is the Virtual Learning Environment we are going to use throughout the year, so it is important to get the hang of it early in the semester. It is going to include a website for each of the modules you are enrolled to, but also an MSc Human Resource Management programme website. Find out more on the student Canvas pages.

Timetable website

Timetables will be released one week before your programme starts, you will be able to access your timetable online.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or there is anything you would like to discuss.

I look forward to welcoming you soon!

I hope you enjoy your time with us. I am looking forward to meeting you all and welcoming you to the programme.
