Preparing for success: Master in Management

Dr Ming Li (Lily), Director of Studies, shares advice as you prepare for the start of your master's programme.

Ming Lily Li

We are very much looking forward to welcoming you to our Master in Management programme, affectionately referred to as MiM.

My name is Lily and I am a senior lecturer in International Human Resource Management and the new Director of Studies for the MiM programme.

My research is in the areas of cross-cultural management, international HRM, global leadership, Chinese management, and the application of research methods.

I serve on the editorial review board of the Academy of Management Learning & Education and the Journal of Management. I have taught undergraduate, master's, MBA and executive education programs in countries such as the UK, Ireland, China, France, Singapore, Japan and Sri Lanka.

I have academic support and feedback hours every week when you are very welcome to join me for an online chat, or in person. All of your module leaders will also have academic support and feedback hours dedicated to students, so please do make use of them should you have any questions about learning and teaching on your modules.

Before you start, we recommend that you read good quality business news sources, for example, the BBC Business News website, Bloomberg Businessweek magazine, Forbes magazine, The Economist magazine, The Financial Times and The Wall Street Journal.

During your studies, you will become intelligent consumers of cutting-edge business and management research and you will be required to read and review published research papers. We therefore highly recommend that you explore research that is published in peer-reviewed academic journals, for example, the Academy of Management Journal, British Journal of Management, Harvard Business Review, Long Range Planning, Organization and Organization Studies.

My best tips for succeeding on your programme are to take advantage of everything that is on offer, including extra-curricular activities such as the MiM Accelerator Skills for Success programme and the ‘We can work it out’ business consultancy challenge; to attend all of your classes and to come to class prepared and ready to join in-class discussion; read widely and pursue your own intellectual curiosity.

On the programme you can look forward to your own personal and professional development in a supportive and nurturing environment, where you can learn from our internationally diverse faculty and from each other, to develop crucial employability skills such as digital fluency, self-confidence and problem-solving. You will learn more than just the typical subjects associated with a postgraduate management program. We help you to develop your self-awareness and to develop the skills required to take on management and leadership roles in contemporary organisations.

A few things you can look forward to taking part in, alongside your programme, are the ULMS ExECS award and the ‘We can work it out’ Master's Consultancy Challenge.

Through the ULMS Extracurricular Engagement, Careers, and Skills Award (ExECS) you can develop skills in the areas of careers and employability, personal development, networking practice, and take part in social and cultural activities. These are areas that ULMS believes will provide you with the skillset and knowledge needed to enhance your student experience.

The Master's Consultancy Challenge is open to all MSc Management School students across all disciplines. It is a fantastic opportunity to work with employers and gain experience of solving a real-world business strategic challenge. Companies that have taken part in previous years include PwC, Santander, Decathlon, Mando, Sysdoc and Chester Zoo. You can watch a short video about the consultancy challenge here.

It is very important that you familiarise yourselves with the following online facilities:

This is the Virtual Learning Environment we are going to use throughout the year, so it is important to get the hang of it early in the semester. It is going to include a website for each of the modules you are enrolled on, but also an Master in Management programme website. Find out more on the student Canvas pages.

Timetable website

Timetables will be released one week before your programme starts, you will be able to access your timetable online.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or if there is anything you would like to discuss.

I look forward to welcoming you soon!
