Finance & Management MBA, 2009

Rekha Karna

I moved to Liverpool to pursue my MBA in September 2008 after having worked at Goldman Sachs in Bangalore, India.

After spending two and a half years in the corporate world, I was beginning to stagnate in my comfort zone and had limited opportunities to enhance my skills and knowledge.

Why did you choose the Finance and Management MBA?

Primarily to gain a holistic view of the global business world as well as broaden my understanding of the financial aspects of management decisions.

The MBA has not only equipped me with the soft skills that are required to be successful in the corporate world but provided a strong foundation enabling me to link theoretical concepts to practical applications.

Did you complete a dissertation or work-based project?

My dissertation topic—Strategies Adopted by Toronto Dominion Bank—Wishful Thinking or Excellent Planning' examined one bank that survived the financial crisis, coming out unscathed.

Given my experience within the financial industry, this topic was very close to my heart. It also challenged me to apply the knowledge I had gained from modules such as corporate finance, strategy and financial analysis, to a real organisation.

What do you particularly like about the Management School?

Being closely involved with the set-up of the Student Consultancy group within the Management School, only aided my networking skills and added to my overall learning experience.

What do you feel has been the most rewarding element of the course?

Having an MBA from a reputed university has not only elevated my chances of achieving a leadership position but also enhanced my business management capabilities.

In my opinion, the MBA programme is not about what you learn, it's about who you are and how you do things and is about becoming a fully rounded individual.

Following graduation, I obtained a role within structured products operations at the Royal Bank of Scotland in Stoke-on-Trent.

Within a few months, I was promoted to team manager to complete migrations of functions from London. In June 2013, I was offered a position with prime brokerage transaction management, serving multi-billion dollar hedge fund clients.

What are your future career goals?

I was recently offered the opportunity to move to the Big Apple, and now manage a team of eight client service professionals at JP Morgan Prime Brokerage Middle Office, New York.

My team is responsible for providing operational support across equities, fixed income and custody to over 150 hedge fund clients globally with a net AUM of over 50bn dollars.
