Photography and Visual Media

My main teaching specialism is in photography and visual media. I look at photography from a media and cultural studies perspective, looking at changes in media technologies and aesthetics. I also look at the ways in which photographs are exchanged in social media and how we can understand what we are doing when we communicate using photographs. I encourage students to become adept at close reading of photographs but also to develop their understanding of the materiality and technologies of visual culture, and to engage with theory and criticism.

Museum and Exhibition Studies

I have a lot of experience teaching around exhibitions, collections and material culture. My approach to teaching these kinds of topics is very object based, and in class I often work with objects, exhibition visits and writing exercises.
