Dr Feldman-Barrett, a Senior Lecturer in the School of Humanities, Languages and Social Science at Griffith University, Australia, will discuss the Beatles’ social and cultural impact as understood through the experiences and lives of women, exploring the various and multi-faceted relationships women have had with the band: from the fans at the height of Beatlemania; to the wives and girlfriends, and to a re-examination of key female figures in the group’s history.
The event will mark International Women’s Day 2021 and celebrates the launch of the Department of Music’s new MA in the Beatles. It also continues our Yoko Series of events as we count down to the opening of the University’s Yoko Ono Lennon Centre later this year.
Academic Speakers
Dr Christine Feldman-Barrett is a member of the Griffith Centre for Social and Cultural Research. She is the author of We are the Mods': A Transnational History of a Youth Subculture (2009), the first scholarly book dedicated to the history and global reach of Mod culture, and the editor of Lost Histories of Youth Culture (2015). She has published on topics of youth culture history in various collected volumes and in the Journal of Youth Studies, Space and Culture, Feminist Media Studies, and Popular Music and Society.
Dr Holly Tessler completed her MBA and PhD at the University of Liverpool and joined the teaching staff as Lecturer in Music Industries in 2019. Her research on the Beatles attempts to understand how their music, history/histories and narrative(s) circulate throughout popular music and culture in various mediated forms, including popular and classical music, film, radio, television programming and advertising, tourism and heritage, publishing, retail/consumer culture as well as online and social media.
