Asylum Seekers Scholarship

Applications for 2022 are closed.

The University of Liverpool are pleased to offer tuition fee and maintenance support for up to four undergraduate students who have sought protection in the UK, so they can succeed in higher education. The scholarships cover the cost of tuition and provide awards from £4,000* per year to support the costs of study e.g. equipment, books, travel and accommodation.

These awards are for applicants applying for undergraduate programmes only, excluding clinical programmes in the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Health Sciences and Veterinary Science.

*The value of the scholarship awarded will be dependent upon individual circumstances.


Eligibility

To be considered for our Asylum Seekers Scholarship you must:

  • Be an asylum seeker in the UK, a dependant of someone seeking asylum, or have temporary status such as discretionary leave or limited leave to remain in the UK, or be the dependent of someone with such status
  • Have been granted Humanitarian Protection, leave as a stateless person, or Limited Leave to Remain in the UK, or be a dependant or partner of someone with leave on these grounds
  • Have applied for asylum in the UK before you applied for a place at University
  • Be unable to access mainstream funding, e.g. funding from the Student Loans Company or local authority grants
  • Hold a conditional or unconditional offer from the University of Liverpool for a full time undergraduate course starting in September 2022 (excluding clinical programmes in the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Health Sciences and Veterinary Science)
  • Not already hold a degree or equivalent higher level qualification
  • Currently attend a school, college, community or voluntary group who will provide a reference in support of your application. Priority may be given to applicants who have been educated in the local area (Merseyside)
  • Submit a complete application form with all relevant documentation by the deadline – 5pm on 30th April 2022.

To support your application

You will need to provide a supporting statement from a referee to complete your application. The referee must provide their contact details and they must confirm that the school, college, community or voluntary group that they represent wishes to support your application. The supporting statement should be no longer than 750 words and should answer the following questions:

  • What are the applicant's personal and financial circumstances and what barriers have they overcome to continue their education?
  • How well suited is the applicant to the higher education course they plan to take and how realistic are the student's ambitions?
  • What contribution, to your knowledge, has the student made to college life and/or their community?
  • How do you think the student would benefit from the support offered by the University of Liverpool?
  • Is there any other information that you believe is relevant to the student's application?

You must provide the documentation that you have received from the Home Office in relation to your asylum claim.

In the subject line of your email please write the following words: ‘Asylum Seekers Scholarship Application’
If you do not receive an email to acknowledge your scholarship application within 1 week of submission, please get in touch to check that we have received your application.

Closing Date

Your application must reach us by the closing date of 30th April 2022, 5.00pm.

Decisions

Final decisions on scholarship applications will be taken by a panel comprised of representatives from the following:
• Admissions
• Faculty of Science and Engineering
• Faculty of Health and Life Sciences
• Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences
• International Advice and Guidance
• The Liverpool Guild of Students
• Widening Participation and Outreach

Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their Asylum Seeker Scholarship application during the first week of June 2022.
