Last week staff and students from across the Institute of Population gathered together for a summer away day to celebrate successes as well as to learn more about plans and priorities for the coming year.

Professor Sally Sheard, Executive Dean of the Institute, welcomed attendees and provided an update on the University’s plans for Strategy 2031, including our aims for reaching net zero.

Rob Lindsay from the Centre for Innovation in Education gave an insightful presentation into generative AI in education and its potential to innovate and transform teaching. This included how to prevent plagiarism - a hot topic across higher education, as well as ways in which AI could be used in supporting research.

Professor Joe Rafferty, Chief Executive of Mersey Care NHS Trust discussed how we work together towards a 21st century model of mental healthcare in Liverpool. The aim is to move from a ‘see and treat’ approach to population health management to ‘predict and prevent’. He also highlighted the new £10.5m Mental Health Research for Innovation Centre (M-RIC), a University of Liverpool and MerseyCare collaboration aimed at improving mental healthcare for patients and service users.

Tom West, Head of Operations had prepared a video that showed a range of highlights from across the Institute for the past year:

The event closed with the Institute’s inaugural Staff Awards. Over 80 nominations were received from staff and students across all of the award categories, recognising the hard work that goes on across the Institute. The awards were presented by Professor Sally Sheard and Tom West.  Tom commented: “It was wonderful to have an opportunity to highlight some of the exceptional work being delivered by our brilliant staff from across the whole Institute”.
