Great debates in psychology
My 3rd year module 'great debates in psychology' covers topics where scientific consensus is elusive, such as free will and consciousness.
I love this module because it gives me a chance to engage with areas of literature outside my own field. The idea is not to find answers, but to cultivate a sense of puzzlement about things which may appear ordinary and mundane, like seeing objects and deciding what to do.
Practical research skills
This is an MRES module about practical research skills, namely, writing journal articles, grant proposals, oral presentations and poster presentations. This is aimed at students who are considering a career in academia. I encourage students to develop an understanding of how money flows through the institution, and how competition for money shapes every aspect of academic life. I also cover ideas by people who are critical of recent reform in University, and those who think broadly about the purpose of higher education.
EEG methods
Many of my project students use a brain recording tool called electroencephalography (EEG). I teach students who are at different levels of understanding, from complete novice to PhD level.
