The School of Physical Sciences is pleased to report that its application for an Athena SWAN Bronze award has been successful.

Thanks go to all of the members of the School's Athena SWAN working group for their effort and enthusiasm in preparing the application, and to the wider School community for their excellent support for this initiative.

The Athena SWAN Charter recognises and celebrates good employment practice for women working in science, technology, engineering, medicine and mathematics (STEMM) in higher education and research.

The Athena SWAN Charter was launched in 2005 with three core beliefs:

  • The advancement of science, technology, engineering, medicine and mathematics is fundamental to quality of life across the globe.
  • It is vitally important that women are adequately represented in what has traditionally been, and still is, a male-dominated area.
  • Science cannot reach its full potential unless it can benefit from the talents of the whole population, and until women and men can benefit equally from the opportunities it affords.

Dr Kamila Zychaluk and Jia Shao from the Department of Mathematical Sciences represented the School at the awards ceremony in Cambridge in November 2014, where they were presented with the bronze award by Dame Julia Higgins (photo above)
