Graduate Association Hong Kong & Tung Postgraduate Scholarships

The University is able to offer competitive scholarships for offer holders from Hong Kong, SAR and PR China for both postgraduate taught master's and research programmes.

Amount

The University of Liverpool Graduate Association Hong Kong postgraduate scholarships are worth up to £5,000 or up to £10,000 and are awarded to students originating from Hong Kong and mainland China who can prove academic excellence and have been admitted to pursue full-time studies at the University of Liverpool.

The Tung Foundation postgraduate scholarships is worth £10,000 and is awarded annually to students originating from Hong Kong and mainland China who can prove academic excellence and have been admitted to pursue full-time studies at the University of Liverpool.

The Nelson Yu Law Scholarship covers all tuition fees for three years for a PhD programme in Law. It is awarded to students who originate from Hong Kong and mainland China who can prove academic excellence and have been admitted to pursue full-time studies at the University of Liverpool.

About the donors

The Tung Foundation

The Tung Foundation, founded by the late CY Tung, father of Liverpool graduates, CH Tung (BEng Hons Marine Engineering 1960, Hon LLD 1997) and CC Tung (BEng Hons Mechanical Engineering 1964, Hon LLD 2009), supports social, cultural and educational causes.

ULGAHK

The University of Liverpool Graduate Association (Hong Kong) (ULGAHK) scholarships were established in 1997 following a generous donation from an anonymous benefactor. The objectives of the scholarships are to promote educational exchange and academic research respectively, between the University of Liverpool and residents of Hong Kong. 

The Nelson Yu Law Scholarship

Dr Yui Chiu (Nelson) Yu (Hon LLD 1999)

Dr Yu was admitted as a solicitor to the Supreme Court of England and the Supreme Court of Hong Kong in 1966. He is also a Founding Partner of Messrs Yu, Tsang & Loong, an experienced law firm in Hong Kong. In addition, Dr Yu has also served as a Director of The Kowloon Development Company Ltd, a prominent commercial property company. Throughout his career, Dr Yu has been actively involved in the legal community, including his membership in the Disciplinary Committee of the Law Society of Hong Kong and the Board of Review (Inland Revenue Ordinance) Hong Kong.

Dr Yu's dedication to education is evident through his service as a member of the Board of Trustees of Shaw College, Chinese University of Hong Kong. His commitment to philanthropy is exemplified by his generous donation to Tsinghua University in 2000, which played a vital role in establishing the School of Public Policy and Management Library and the Research Fund for the School of 21st Century Development Studies. Furthermore, Dr Yu has established several scholarships and bursaries to support aspiring students.

Dr Yu holds degrees from the London School of Economics and the University of London. His exceptional contributions to society have been acknowledged through an Honorary Fellowship by the Chinese University of Hong Kong and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Liverpool.

In addition to his philanthropic work, Dr Yu serves as a Trustee of The Yu Lee Mo Fan Charitable Foundation and the Scholarship Fund of the University of Liverpool Graduate Association (Hong Kong). His generous donation of £1.25 million to the Association in 1997 established scholarships that continue to support students from Hong Kong who wish to pursue their studies at the University of Liverpool.

Eligibility

The scholarships are open to candidates originating from Hong Kong and mainland China who are or will be studying full-time postgraduate (postgraduate taught or postgraduate research) studies at the main University of Liverpool campus. Candidates are required to have made an application to study at the University of Liverpool’s main campus.

The scholarships are open to postgraduate students in all years of study at the time of application, however the awards are only available for a maximum of 3 years, subject to successful reapplication each year. The scholarship is not automatically renewed and recipients will need to reapply for the scholarship each year.

Successful candidates will be awarded a scholarship to cover partial payment of the tuition fee or living expenses. The scholarship may or may not be held concurrently with any other scholarships or bursaries at the discretion of the Award Committee. Those already in receipt of China Scholarships Council funding will not be eligible.

Please note: successful candidates must have a UK bank account in their own name that accepts BACS payments.

Applications for this scholarship are now open. They will close at midnight on Monday, April 29, 2024.

When applications open, candidates should provide all applicable listed documentation below, including the scholarship application form completed in full. Please note that incomplete applications will not be considered.

  • Supporting letter from your academic supervisor (current postgraduate students only)
  • Relevant certificates (including your undergraduate degree certificate) and transcripts (record sheets of your marks or grades)
  • Academic CV.

Current scholarship recipients

Current scholarship recipients are to submit all the following documents to giving@liverpool.ac.uk.

  • Completed postgraduate application form
  • A one-page report of your progress (detailing your academic year progress)
  • Relevant transcripts (record sheets of your marks or grades)
  • Academic CV.

Please submit these documents saved as PDFs with your 9-digit student number as part of the file name, e.g. SupervisorLetter123456789.pdf. Applications without this number cannot be considered.
