Introduction to planting design

It's all too easy to have a garden full of individual plants that feels more like a collection rather than a well thought-out design. Discover how to plant a garden for all seasons, combining plant structures, colours and forms.

The course will improve your understanding of plants, and their use in design. You will learn how to create visually pleasing and sustainable planting schemes and designs.

  • Basic site surveys and how to read gardens
  • How to develop a masterplan and individual planting plans
  • Influence of different garden styles
  • Plant types and their use
  • Plant ecology and the qualities of plants
  • Combining colour, form, and texture
  • Different planting styles and how to use them effectively

It also provides a foundation for further learning or training in the field of horticulture, principally through progression on to our other Level 1 courses and/or the RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles and Practices of Horticulture.
