Preparing for success: MSc Accounting and Finance

Dr Kostas Pappas, Director of Studies, shares advice as you prepare for the start of your master's programme.

Dr Kostas Pappas We are very much looking forward to welcoming you to our MSc in Accounting and Finance programme.

My name is Kostas Pappas and I am an Assistant Professor of Accounting and the Director of Studies for the MSc Accounting and Finance programme. I am also your Module Leader for your Financial Statement Analysis and Valuation, a Semester 2 module.

I have academic support and feedback hours every week and you are very welcome to join me for an online chat or in person. All of your module leaders will also have academic support and feedback hours dedicated to students, so please do make use of them should you have any questions about learning and teaching on your modules.

A good practice is to familiarize yourself and start reading good quality business news sources, for example, the BBC Business News website, Bloomberg Businessweek magazine, The Economist magazine, The Financial Times, and The Wall Street Journal. The Institute of Charted Accounts in England and Wales (ICAEW) provides invaluable up-to-date information for any new accounting regulation.

Your studies are based on the principle of research-led education and throughout the year you will be required to read and review published research papers. We therefore highly recommend that you explore research that is published in peer-reviewed academic journals, for example, The Accounting Review, the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Accounting and Economics, and the Journal of Financial Economics.

There is no magic recipe for success. During your studies, you will find your way to succeed. Nevertheless, my best tips for succeeding in your programme are to take advantage of everything that is on offer; to attend all of your classes, and to come to class prepared and ready to join the in-class discussion; read widely and pursue your intellectual curiosity.

The programme will help you advance your own personal and professional development, learn from our internationally diverse faculty and each other, and develop crucial employability skills such as digital fluency, teamwork, and problem-solving. You will learn more than just the typical subjects associated with a postgraduate accounting and finance program. We will help you to develop your self-awareness and to develop the skills required to take on management and leadership roles in contemporary organisations.

I hope you have a challenging, exciting, and enjoyable time and I look forward to welcoming you soon!
