What made you decide to study at Maastricht?
I had to change my initial choice because of COVID-related restrictions. I subsequently chose the Netherlands because the country seemed more diverse and inclusive than other European options.
Maastricht University stood out to me because of its problem-based learning style; tutorials are student-led, and everyone is actively engaged in discussing the material. This style of learning appealed to me so that I could improve my understanding of the modules I was studying and my confidence in discussing them. Furthermore, I wanted to be academically challenged as the answers weren’t provided by the lecturers.

What did you enjoy most about studying at Maastricht?
I enjoyed the big international community as over half of the students are international. This allowed me to make friends from all over the world and learn more about their cultures. Within my friendship group, we would get together and cook dishes from our respective countries, such as Nigeria, Germany, Sierra Leone and Gambia. This was a highlight as I got to learn how to make some dishes and got to eat them!
Additionally, the University has lots of sports clubs available, so I was able to continue competing in athletics, and the team was very nice and encouraging to train and compete with.
I also really enjoyed how Maastricht is a smallish city, so it felt relaxed and slow-paced paced, and there were lots of restaurants and independent cafes to enjoy. It was a perfect city to cycle in.
What would you say to someone to encourage them to study at Maastricht University?
It is such a good opportunity to grow as a person and academically, as the work is challenging but very rewarding, and it will set you up for your final year.
Also, Maastricht is right next to Belgium and Germany and very close to other European countries, so it is a great opportunity to travel easily and cheaper than if you were in the UK. If you want to go to a small city that has a relaxed culture and a big international community, then Maastricht is for you!
