Teaching
My teaching interests range from (German) sociolingustics to applied linguistics and language pedagogy. My current teaching responsibilities include:
'Language Awareness', an introduction to linguistics for first year students of all languages.
Sociolinguistics on the first year German foundational module and on the second year module 'Multilingual Liverpool: Reading the City'. In final year I am responsible for the sociolinguistics module 'German Language and Society'.
I teach on and contribute to other modules on language pedagogy and specialist translation.
I'm interested in accelerated language learning and teach the first year intensive German ab initio modules.
Applied Linguistics
I teach an introduction to linguistics for language learners 'Language Awareness'. In the first half of the semester the module focuses on cognitive language learning processes and learning strategies. The second part of the semester is dedicated to the description of language, starting with phonetics/phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics as it is relevant for language learners.
German Sociolinguistics
In final year I teach 'German Language and Society', investigating the ways in which national identity, group identity and individual identity are built and expressed through the German language.
In first year I teach German linguistics as part of the 'Introduction to German Studies', introducing students to the history of the German language and a range of language varieties in today's Germany.
German language
One of my specialisms in Applied Linguistics is accelerated language learning. I therefore teach the ab initio, accelerated German modules. I also teach translation and interpreting in the final year language module.
