Dr Michael Burkitt, Clinical Lecturer in Gastroenterology

After completing a medical degree and an intercalated MPhil I undertook a number of junior clinical roles. In September 2005 I was appointed as a Specialist Registrar in Gastroenterology, before the University’s ICAT programme had been established.

Between 2008 and 2011, I held a Wellcome Trust Research Training Fellowship to study for a PhD and I was appointed as a Clinical Lecturer (CL) in early 2012.

I have been successful in securing external funding during my CL post, both as a principal investigator and as a co-applicant. I have supervised PhD students and led successful summer projects with students from other institutions, which have resulted in prize -winning abstracts for which I was the lead author.

Through receiving a combined Wellcome Trust / University of Liverpool research fellowship, I have supported my career development with further research time and funding. This opportunity was uniquely available to CLs. At the end of my training I intend to apply for a post-CCT fellowship.
