Emerging infections and pandemic threats

We lead high-impact research in outbreak-prone infections and infections of public health interest, aligned to the measures to combat them.

We host the NIHR Health Protection Research Unit in Emerging and Zoonotic Infections and the chief investigator of The Pandemic Institute and the International Severe Acute Respiratory and Emerging Infections Consortium (ISARIC) Clinical Characterisation Protocol UK (CCP-UK).

Our researchers study several emerging viruses, including arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) and mpox, and severe endemic infections of public health interest including human Respiratory Syncytial Virus, Influenza and SARS-CoV-2, developing diagnostic tests, treatments and vaccines.
