Faculty to host Henry Cohen History of Medicine Lecture
The Faculty is delighted to host the Henry Cohen History of Medicine Lecture with guest speaker Professor Simon Szreter.
In collaboration with the Liverpool Medical Institution, the Faculty are hosting the Henry Cohen History of Medicine Lecture with guest speaker Professor Simon Szreter giving a talk on,
Public health and the welfare state in England: a very long-term relationship that needs to be remembered and reinstated.
Simon Szreter is Professor in History and Public Policy at the University of Cambridge and Fellow of St John’s College, Cambridge. He teaches and researches modern public health, economic, social and political history since c.1600. The author and editor of a dozen books and scores of articles, he has played a leading role in foregrounding the relationship between history and public policy through numerous publications and as the managing editor of History&Policy, www.historyandpolicy.org, which he co-founded in 2002 and is now based at the UK’s Institute of Historical Research.
Following the publication in 2005 of Health and Wealth. Studies in History and Policy, Simon was the first non-American to be awarded the Arthur P. Viseltear Prize of the American Public Health Association in 2009 for his distinguished contribution to public health history. His co-authored book Sex Before the Sexual Revolution was longlisted in 2011 for the Samuel Johnson Prize. In 2019 he co-authored with Hilary Cooper and Ben Szreter a winning submission for the inaugural IPPR Economics Prize. His latest publication, After the Virus, Lessons from the Past for a Better Future, was published in paperback by C.U.P. in September 2021 and is co-authored with Hilary Cooper.
The event will commence with a drinks reception at 6pm with the lecture following from 6.30pm until 8pm.
