UKRI – Future Leaders Fellowships Round 9

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) offers the Future Leaders Fellowships scheme to support early career researchers and innovators with outstanding potential.  Funder closing date:  18 Jun 24.  Duration:  up to 7 (4+3) years.  Funding:  no limit.  Further information.  Compulsory internal demand management found here – first mandatory deadline midday 14 Mar 24.

EPSRC – Postdoctoral Fellowships

These support topics in the field of energy, mathematical sciences, synthetic biology. Projects can use a combination of discovery science, innovation, instrumentation and technique development and/or software engineering. Applicants must hold a PhD or have worked in a relevant field for at least 4 years.  Funder closing date:  n/a. Royal Academy of Engineering – UK intelligence community postdoctoral research fellowships

These support the promotion of unclassified basic research in areas of interest to the intelligence, security and defence community working in partnership with university research advisors and collaborating with advisors from the intelligence community, and must address one of the selected research topics. Royal Society – Research Professorship

Royal Society Research Professorships provide long term support to world-class researchers of outstanding achievement for those who are currently prevented from achieving full research capability by competing duties (i.e. already based in the UK) or those who wish to relocate to the UK to undertake their research.  Funder closing date:  08 May 24.  This call is repeated once a year. Duration:  5 years Funding:  Applicants are permitted to apply for up to £1.4m.  Further information.

Royal Society – University Research Fellowships

This covers all fields of natural sciences, including biological research, chemistry, engineering, mathematics and physics, but excludes clinical medicine.  Applicants must have 3 to 8 years postdoctoral experience.  Funder closing date:  10 Sep 24.  This call is repeated once a year. Duration:  8 years (years 6-8 funding subject to satisfactory progress).  Funding:  Salary (up to £41,675 in year 1) and research expenses up to £90k a year.  Further information (internal candidates can see intranet with earlier internal support deadlines – to be updated).

Horizon Europe – Marie Sklodowska Curie Postdoctoral Fellowships

These are aimed at researchers who wish to carry out their research activities abroad.  Applicants must have a maximum of 8 years’ experience since their PhD and comply with mobility rules.  Funder closing date:  11 Sep 24. Duration:  European Postdoctoral Fellowships 1-2 years, Global Postdoctoral Fellowships 2-3 years.  Funding:  Living allowance, mobility allowance and if needed family, long-term leave and special needs allowances.  Research, training and networking costs and a contribution to the management of the project are also provided. Further information

Royal Academy of Engineering – Research fellowships and engineering for development research fellowships

Applications are accepted in an engineering subject area (engineering is defined in its broadest sense).  Applicants must have a maximum of 4 years postdoctoral experience.  Funder closing date:  19 Sep 24.  The call is repeated once a year.  Duration:  5 years.  Funding:  up to £625k including overheads (covers salary and some consumables). Further information  Only 3-4 applications are permitted per institution thus the University runs an internal selection exercise.  (Internal candidates can see intranet with earlier deadlines required for selection.)  (For guidance only - the previous funder deadline was 19 Sep 23 which had an internal compulsory expression of interest deadline 6 Jul 23).

Leverhulme Trust – Early Career Fellowships

Applications will be considered in all subject areas (with a few exceptions).  Applicants must within 4 years of their PhD or have equivalent research experience.  Funder closing date:  23 Feb 25 (forecast). The call is repeated once a year.  Duration:  3 years.  Funding:  Salary (50% required from School – this needs to be discussed well in advance with Head of Department as only a limited number can be supported) and up to £6k a year in research expenses.  Further information
