Personal Statement

Carmen Ríos García specialises in Spanish and English linguistics, with a focus on sociolinguistics, pragmatics, translation and interpreting and the relevance of these fields to the processes involved in second language acquisition.

After completing a five-year undergraduate degree specialising in English Philology at the University of Murcia (Licenciatura en Filosofía y Letras, 1991) she worked as a language assistant and part-time lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University while studying part-time for a Modular MA at the University of Salford. From 1995 to 1998 she coordinated the development and validation of the Spanish strand of the BA (Hons.) Modern Languages at the University of Bournemouth while working part-time towards a PhD Linguistics at the University of Manchester. In 1998 she moved to Northumbria University, where she was responsible for the Spanish university-wide language programmes (Spanish as a major/minor degree subject) and co-supervised the Postgraduate Programme in Hispanic Studies. She went on to teach at the University of Exeter (2009-2010) while completing an MA English Language and Linguistics at Newcastle University. From 2011-2018 she worked at Lancaster University, where she led the development and validation of the Distance MA Translation before becoming Chair of the Language Committee. From January 2019 to December 2022 she was based at the University of Sussex, where she worked on the design and validation of the MA in Translation Studies and served as Director of Student Wellbeing for Year 1 and postgraduate students at the School of Media, Arts and Humanities. She joined the University of Liverpool in January 2023.
