Overview

Embark on a captivating literary journey with our thought-provoking short course, "21st Century Women Writers: ‘In a Strange Land’". Inspired by Diana Evans's acclaimed novel, ‘A House for Alice’, this course delves into the profound themes of belonging, family, and cultural identity in the context of emigration and travel. Through an engaging exploration of four contemporary novels, also including "Watch Us Dance" by Leila Slimani, "August Blue" by Deborah Levy, and "The Story of the Forest" by Linda Grant, we will dive into the literal and symbolic meanings of living in unfamiliar lands. Witness the challenges faced by characters as they navigate the complexities of leaving behind their homes and adapting to new environments. As you explore these narratives, you will sharpen your discursive and critical reading skills, honing your ability to analyse and interpret diverse texts. This course is designed for both avid readers and those curious about the powerful intersection of contemporary fiction, personal experience, and historical and political contexts. No prior knowledge is required—simply bring your enthusiasm for captivating storytelling and a desire to explore the intricate threads of self and society woven by these talented authors. Join us and uncover the captivating tales that shape our understanding of home, culture, and the human experience.

Course Lecturer: Dr Shirley Jones

I have been working at Continuing Education for a number of years. I’ve run courses on Victorian literature, women’s writing, and walking and writing. The seminars are largely based around discussion. But I also provide particular contexts within which to read texts. We work as a group and in smaller discussion groups. I see the seminars as a shared endeavour of exploration and analysis. I hope that seminars are as enjoyable as they are intellectually stimulating. No former knowledge is required.

Courses fees: Full fee £150/Concession £75.
