We offer a range of support and adjustments for successful PEC claims. The support offered will depend on your circumstances and the assessment affected.
Missed assessments, deferrals and resits
If you miss an exam, class test, or assessment deadline and have an approved PEC claim, you’ll usually be allowed to take the assessment at the next available opportunity.
If the missed assessment was your first attempt, you’ll usually get another first attempt (i.e. uncapped).
If it was a resit, you’ll usually be offered another opportunity at the same level (e.g. capped or uncapped depending on your previous attempt).
For most assessments, the next opportunity will be the August resit period, but this could vary for specific types like lab work or placements.
Please note: Deferrals can affect when you receive your results or when you can progress to the next stage of study. Please contact your School or Student Support team if you have any concerns.
Adjustments to assessments and marks
In some cases, the University may:
Exclude a small assessment component (worth 20% or less) from your module mark, if this doesn’t impact your ability to meet learning outcomes
Adjust how a mark is used in progression or classification calculations (this is handled carefully at the exam board stage)
Please note: you normally won’t be allowed to re-sit an assessment you’ve already passed just to improve your mark unless there are PSRB or postgraduate requirements.
Impact on progression and classification
An approved PEC claim will be considered when we’re calculating your year average, degree classification, or decisions around progression.
Boards of Examiners are informed of valid PECs and apply approved processes to ensure your performance is judged fairly
If you’re unsure how a PEC outcome might affect your results, future assessments, or ability to progress, speak to your School Student Support team without delay.
