Legacies of Slavery in Niger (LESLAN)

Description

Website/blog, research reports (36 internal reports - preliminary findings to feed into PI reports), Exhibition in Niamey, Exhibition reports, Archive, special issue journal or edited volume. 20 x5 regions testimonies

Motive

To change the way in which slavery and slave ownership are imagined, to end stigma directed against descendants, and to start an unprecedented public dialogue about slavery in Niger. Will develop an exhibition which will foreground the contributions enslaved persons have made to the country's history.

Context

How can perceptions of historic slavery be changed and how can the stigma be reversed? LESLAN develops an approach rooted in history, hermeneutics and perspective. Using testimonies rooted in memory and other types of historical evidence to make the public rethink their assumptions about historical and contemporary slavery. Project will explore the limits of discursive reversibility.
