Paid roles

The scheme includes the following three types of paid roles:

Most participants on the scheme will start by gaining experience as an Assistant Tutor before moving onto one of the other two roles.

Assistant Tutor

This role involves supporting the delivery of either an LDC Development workshop or webinar.

At present we can only offer observation of the ‘Taking Ownership of the PhD' workshop, but may be able to offer further opportunities in future.

We are also looking for assistants for most webinars, excluding those specific to the careers programmes. The teaching offers an opportunity to gain experience in online facilitation in the synchronous chat area.

A member of the LDC Development Team will be the lead tutor in all of the opportunities offered above and they will offer guidance on the type of facilitation required in the role.

    • In the case of workshops, assistants are normally expected to meet the tutor in advance to allocate specific roles for the day’s delivery
    • Assistant  tutors will be sent a copy of the PowerPoint used for the session in advance of the delivery

  • They will be paid for at least two hours preparation time for full day workshops and pro-rata for half day workshops.

Assistant Developer

This role involves a direct collaboration with a LDC Researcher Developer, who will provide the overall structure of the workshop or webinar and take responsibility for the overall delivery.

This role will be of interest to those who have a specific expertise but do not want to develop their own workshops, or who can offer expertise that will supplement new webinars in the LDC Development programme.

In this role you will share the delivery with the Researcher Developer, including the facilitation of exercises in the workshop or webinar.  Specific delivery roles will be discussed as part of the normal pre-workshop planning process.

Those interested in this delivery are recommended to attend the workshop ‘Facilitating Workshops.

Please enquire if you feel that you can offer a contribution for this role.

PGR Developer

This role involves devising a topic and structure for a short LDC Development workshop or webinar with the support of a LDC Researcher Developer.

Those interested in this delivery are recommended to attend the workshops on ‘Webinar: Designing Workshops and ‘Facilitating Workshops’ in which advice is given on how to prepare these workshops.

The workshops delivered under the scheme will normally be around one-hour to a half day in length and may be delivered as part of an LDC Researcher Week, which take place twice a year,  in October and March.

  • Those planning to take part will need to produce a workshop/webinar title, summary and workshop time-plan and submit this to the LDC Development team at least two months in advance of the Researcher week that they aim to deliver on.
  • All proposals will be reviewed before acceptance. Mentoring and guidance is offered during the preparation and delivery.

Further details are provided in the Scheme handbook.
