All of our STEM activities, in one place

This blog is a summary of all of our STEM activities since 2014. There’s an awful lot that we have achieved, and this part of our web site captures the stories and the activities. Use the links below, or search the tag clouds on the right. [More...]

First steps - STEM Ambassadors
Initially, one member of CPR was a STEM Ambassador (Victoria Harman). Victoria organised a presentation from Kate Hammond (University of Liverpool) to CPR about engagement with young scientists, in November 2014. CPR members were inspired to become STEM ambassadors and Victoria organised an induction for the group from MerseySTEM in January 2015.

Twelve members of CPR (4 x PhD students, 5 x post-docs, 1 x research assistant and 2 x PIs) are registered as STEM Ambassadors, including Professors Beynon and Eyers. There is also one RA and one senior technician who aren’t registered as STEM ambassadors but help with CPR lab tours and visits.

Update November 2015 – one new PhD student is in the process of registering as a STEM ambassador.

Development of links with a sixth form college (Winstanley, WC)
Dr Platt-Skerry (WC) visited CPR and presented activities and ideas to the team in December 2014.

We compiled a program of activities for 2015 including STEM ambassador interviews, open day visits and lab visits for students.

New grants for Winstanley College
We assisted WC to win a gtant from the Royal Society of Chemistry to allow students to run SDS-PAGE analyses in college and a grant from the Royal Society Partnership Scheme.

RSC: “
We found yours to be a very strong application and believe that this contribution will allow you to enrich the experience of your students in the immediate future and in years to come” [LINK]

Winstanley news page:
“The grant…will allow our STEM students to train in the technique of trypsin digestion of proteins and fund visits to the Centre for Proteome Research at the University of Liverpool where the students will be able to run their samples using mass spectrometry. Our students will also be passing these skills on to local high school pupils in training sessions.” [LINK]

Students from Winstanley attended CPR to use an advanced, research grade, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometer.
