Ness Botanic Gardens is offering up an array of weird and wonderful activities this weekend as part of a Family Science Fair.

University of Liverpool scientists will lead some of the hands-on activities and demonstrations at the event, which is being held for British Science Week.

Rose Froud, Education Supervisor at Ness Gardens, said: “We are delighted to be hosting this Family Science Fair event for a fourth year. It’s always very popular with visitors and a really great event for inspiring potential young scientists.”

What’s on?

Learn the ‘Science of Fire’ in the bush-craft area or take part in some chemistry and physics fun with the British Science Association and their ‘Whizz, Bang, Whoosh’ demonstration.

Explore the weird and wonderful things that happen to plants in gardens and become a ‘Garden Detective’. Find out about the creatures that inhabit them; learn how butterflies hide in ‘Butterfly Smart’, become a bee expert in ‘Bee Crazy’ and meet the worms that eat your leftover food in ‘Urban Worms’. Learn about composting in ‘Waste Not Want Not’ and find out whether microbes are friends or foes in ‘Plants, Microbes, and Global Warming’.

Meet Chester Zoo’s safari rangers and discover ‘Who works at the Zoo’ and what the most exciting jobs going are. Also, there’s the opportunity to make and take home a beautiful mother’s day or birthday card with real flowers in ‘Herbarium Crafts’.
