The History of the Friends of Ness Gardens

In 1962 a season ticket/year pass/membership was formally created under the stewardship of the Director, Ken Hulme. Since its inception nearly 57 years ago, this has helped to mould Ness Botanic Gardens and has provided key support throughout the majority of the Post-Bulley period through revenue generating and project led missions.

The revenue generated through the membership has helped to fund various initatives during it's lifespan, including the development of key areas on the site such as The Hulme Deck and Restaurant, The Weather Station and The Pingo Waterfalls to name just three.

In 2001 the membership was formally changed to The Friends of Ness Gardens, an 'outside' charity in support of the gardens who provided the yearly pass as well as developing of ther benefits such as a seed list (sourced from the gardens), coach trips to other gardens and supporting the gardens in winter months with a lecture series (open to all).

The charity was disolved on the 31st of July 2019 and the membership scheme was taken back 'in house' to the University of Liverpool, but its legacy will live on.
