Welcome to Accounting and Finance

Information for students starting study in September 2026

Dear students,

My name is Adam Deller, and I am the Director of Studies for BSc Accounting and Finance and BSc Accounting and Finance with a Year in Industry. I’m really looking forward to meeting you during Welcome Week.

Here are my top tips for making the most of your time at the University of Liverpool:

1) Be proactive! The more you put into your time here, the more you will get out of it. There are so many resources and opportunities available to you; make sure you get involved.

2) Think! Your course becomes much more interesting when you really think about the topics you are covering and what they mean. You are studying a really practical subject that is in the news almost every day. The more deeply you think about it, the more you can apply your knowledge to the real world, and the more you will enjoy it.  If you want to start building your awareness of topical issues in the industry, you can check out the following news sources:

• Financial Times – all of our students have free subscriptions to this. If you can’t access it yet, we will set you up when you arrive.

3) Get involved! There are lots of opportunities to get to know your classmates and your lecturers are also keen to get to know you. Having friends on the programme and feeling confident to approach your lecturers will not only make your experience more enjoyable, it is also key in building your network- many of our alumni are still in contact to this day.

If you are looking for things to read before you arrive, the best preparation I would recommend is to look at some of those news sources listed above. The key thing is to really think about what you read and try to understand what is going on.

Question what you are reading and think about the wider implications of a particular story. If there is something that interests you, look into it in more detail.

It isn’t about reading everything that’s going on in the business world but trying to really understand the things you do read about. This will help you develop the key skill of commercial awareness.

It's really important to put all of the knowledge you will gain during your studies into context. Accounting and Finance operate in a wider world that is impacted by economic and social issues, as well as lots of other factors.

Reading and thinking about what is going on in the business world will help build up your practical understanding of the subject, which is very valuable.

Welcome Week is Monday 21 to Friday 25 September, which is filled with talks, activities and socials where you can meet your Director of Studies, your coursemates and the wider Management School staff. Etienne Welch: Accounting and Finance with a Year in Industry

Top three tips for University:

1) Make the most of your lecturers’ real-world professional experience. Their in-depth understanding of the accounting and finance industry and its evolving nature is so useful.

2) Also make the most of all of the employability support available. I used the Career Studio for interview preparation, CV reviews and application support. The practice this gave me really helped in my employability-focused modules on the course and helped me get a placement for my Year in Industry.

3) Finally, get ready for how much Liverpool has to offer. Whether it’s the sports, the music scene, the museums, or the wide range of places to eat, there’s always something new to explore. I made a list of things I wanted to experience when I moved here, and I still haven’t managed to finish it because there’s so much to do.
