The University of Liverpool Management School’s (ULMS) doctoral programmes have been recognised as an example of good practice and high-quality support for PhD students, in the latest Internal Periodic Review (IPR) of postgraduate research (PGR) programmes.

The assessment, undertaken by a panel of academic and professional services staff from across the University, concluded: “ULMS set the standard for how a well-resourced School should look and operate.”

IPRs are intended to provide academic departments, and the University, with insights on the quality of research degree provision, and to produce agreed action points towards quality enhancement.

The process involves a review of relevant documentation, including PGR statistics, module outlines and assessments, and a self-evaluation report, alongside two days of interviews with relevant staff and students.

These face-to-face sessions covered different key aspects of PGR delivery, including research environment, student support, management of PGR provision, and staff engagement.

After meeting 19 postgraduate students in their first, second, and third year of study, from the Management, Accounting and Finance, and Economics pathways, the panel stated:

“The School’s focus on encouraging students to achieve publication and contribute to conference proceedings was highlighted for commendation.

“Employability was clearly a priority and was woven throughout the provision in place for students.”

The review encompassed PhD and Professional Doctorate provisions offered by the School and programmes delivered in association with Xi’an Jiaotong - Liverpool University (China) and Kaplan Open Learning.

The ULMS Internal Periodic Review took place on 6 and 7 February 2023.
