Abstract

Human resource management (HRM) system strength is the phenomena of the process mechanism through which the HR system is delivered to send signals to employees and is distinct from the content of HR practices.

In this seminar, prof Karin Sanders will explain the background and history of the HRM system strength concept and share some results from recent research in which cultural values and norms are examined.

More in detail, Karin will present results of a meta-analysis focusing on the influence of cultural values (power distance, in-group collectivism and performance orientation) and the cultural norm of tightness – looseness on the relationship between HRM system strength and employee outcomes.

The results show that cultural values and cultural norm jointly influence this relationship.

In addition, Karin will present results from a research on manager’s sharing information with their employees in times of crisis, like the COVID-19 pandemic.

The results show that the interaction of manager’s motivation (the severity of the crisis and the reputation of the organization) and their general beliefs (power distance and uncertainty avoidance) can explain the employment of HRM system strength.

Theoretical and practical implications of these two studies will be discussed.
