The role of informed consent in the veterinary clinic: sharing the decision-making

My postdoctoral fellowship builds on my doctoral studies. My PhD thesis focused on consent for elective surgery, using companion animal neutering as a case study. I am now exploring the connection between shared decision-making and informed consent, and investigating methods of promoting a two-way exchange of information between veterinary professionals and clients. A focus of this research is the notion of "best interests" when applied to animal patients, and how both parties to the consent procedure negotiate these interests.
