Personal Statement

I was born and grew up in England in the 1960s and educated locally.
I went to University first in Kent, then studied in Dublin at UCD for five years in the 1980s, leaving in 1991.
Since then I have worked in the university sector, lecturing in media, cultural studies, literature and Irish Studies in Staffordshire, St Mary's in Twickenham and Leeds.
I have been a visiting professor in the cities of Barcelona, Sao Paulo and Vienna (the latter for two spells in 2016 and 2017).
I was Head of the School of Arts and Humanities at St Mary's University (2011-2016) and part of the senior management team of the University.
I was also the Director of the Centre for Irish Studies at St Mary's between 2011-2016.
In addition to my current role with the University of Liverpool, I teach as an Associate Lecturer in English and Film at Birkbeck, University of London (since 2016).
I am a Board member of the Irish Film Festival London, actively involved running its programme of events, in particular its annual festival in London (November)
I live in Richmond, west London.
