Four academics from the Institute of Infection, Veterinary, and Ecological Sciences have been honoured with prestigious Fellowships by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS).

The title Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons has been in existence for over 140 years and since 2016, the RCVS Fellowship has been awarded in recognition of outstanding contributions to the veterinary profession.

The Liverpool academics honoured are:

Professor David Bardell, Department of Equine Clinical Science
Meritorious Contributions to Clinical Practice

Dr Fernando Malalana, Department of Equine Clinical Science
Meritorious Contributions to Clinical Practice

Professor George Oikonomou, Department of Livestock and One Health
Meritorious Contributions to Knowledge

Dr Dorina Timofte, Department of Veterinary Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology
Meritorious Contributions to the Profession

The Fellowships were awarded at the annual RCVS Fellowship Day held in London that featured a keynote speech by Professor Dame Sally Davies, the UK Special Envoy on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and former Chief Medical Officer for England, during which she recognised and thanked the UK veterinary profession and research community for their efforts to reduce antimicrobial use in animals.

In addition, Daisy Cookson, a fourth year undergraduate veterinary student, emerged as one of three standout candidates chosen from 38 applicants to showcase her research at the 'Fellows of the Future?' student competition.

Daisy gave a fantastic presentation detailing research that she conducted during her MRes project on ‘The biological response of canine cruciate ligamentocytes following treatment with synovial fluid extracellular vesicles’ in front of an audience that included multiple experts in canine orthopaedics.
