Professor Calum Semple inaugurated as LMI President
This week Professor Calum Semple from the Department of Clinical Infection, Microbiology and Immunology delivered his inaugural lecture as President of the Liverpool Medical Institution (LMI).
Calum Semple is Professor of Child Health and Outbreak Medicine in the Department of Clinical Infection, Microbiology and Immunology. This prestigious appointment was a result of a blind nomination process and confirmed with a vote by LMI members.
As the 184th President of the LMI, Calum will lead the LMI's education programme and will officiate events for the year, representing medical professionals across Liverpool. Calum’s main goal as President is to broaden membership to public health practitioners, allied health professionals, trainees and students across the region.
The LMI is one of the oldest medical societies in the world, tracing its earliest origins back to a 'Surgeons' Book Club' formed by a group of local surgeons who worked in the Liverpool Infirmary between 1768 and 1770. In 1839, the Liverpool Medical Library and Liverpool Medical Society merged, creating a single organisation known as the Liverpool Medical Institution (LMI).
Professor Calum Semple commented: “In my year as President, I look forward to welcoming you to the Liverpool Medical Institute. I am sure you will be inspired by the lectures from the medical leaders we have speaking over the year and be fascinated by the historic collections on display.”
This week’s inaugural lecture focussed on Osler, Weber & Rendu and The Liverpool Lifecourse Hereditary Haemorrhagic Telangiectasia Service as well as the importance of broadening diversity across the sector.
