Education

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is committed to delivering world-leading education across a comprehensive range of programmes, to support student’s academic journey and build a strong sense of community, identity and engagement for all.

Through various projects and initiatives, we work to widen the access to higher education by supporting potential students throughout their education, developing innovative teaching practices across the Faculty, and provide valuable experiences and training to enhance the employability of our students and to provide them with the best start for their future careers.

The Faculty Education team helps organise and support not only our Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes, but a series of access courses, internships, research study schemes, and many other educational opportunities provided by the Faculty.

Our Education Plan

The Education Plan focuses on the opportunities and challenges we will meet in the coming years. To address these priorities, the plan is broken down into three themes:

Transformative Curricula and Pedagogy

Working with partners across the University to transform our curricula, via substantial review in partnership with others, such as the Centre for Innovation in Education. Drawing on student input, and involving peers from other institutes, the process will be driven by evidence-based decision making to ensure our curricula and pedagogy provide the very best experience.

Community, Identity and Engagement

A sense of community is relevant for all: students and staff. Building the Education networks across the Faculty aids in strengthening the community of experts, both in academic and professional services roles, engaged in excellent practice. We will continue our practice of working across academic and professional services to strengthen our approach to Education, while prioritising student community and engagement to help shape our strategies.

Supporting the Academic Journey

Embedding employability within our education strategy, affording students comprehensive personal and career development to ensure we continue to offer exciting and highly relevant support for students preparing to enter the workplace. We work closely with students, academics and professional services staff to improve the communication of opportunities and the various sources of support and guidance available.

Beacons Projects

The Beacons Project was established to identify some of the very best research, and provide funding to ensure outstanding projects are better able to explore their suggested aims, and reach their full potential. This funding has helped many projects to deliver significant, globally influential research, as well as improving student experience, public engagement, as well as addressing issues of inequality within the University and throughout society.
