Personal Statement

James is a historian of the political uses of history in Russia today. His research focuses on history education in Russia, monuments and memory. His most recent book is The Use of History in Putin's Russia, and he has also published on Russian foreign policy under Vladimir Putin, the centenary of the Russian Revolution and commemorations of the Gulag in contemporary Russia. Before completing his PhD in 2018 at Anglia Ruskin, James lived in Moscow for seven years, where he worked as a teacher and freelance writer. He is currently working on a contemporary history of Russia's Golden Ring cities.
