Research

Research Interest 1

My research examines gangs, crime and violence in the major British conurbations from 1870 to 1939. I am interested in patterns of gang formation and conflict, and in the responses to gang activity among the press, the police and courts, and the wider public. These issues are explored in The Gangs of Manchester (2008) and City of Gangs: Glasgow and the Rise of the British Gangster (2013).
