Less than two months ago, the University of Liverpool launched a new COVID-19 Student Crisis Support Fund to provide support to students and their families facing financial hardship as a result of the current global pandemic.

Since the launch of the Fund, the University of Liverpool’s Money Advice and Guidance Team have awarded funding to more than 70 students. We spoke to a second year Geography student about how receiving funding from the Student Crisis Support Fund has impacted them:

“I work very hard during holidays to ensure that I have enough money to cover any costs. During the holiday period, I usually work in bars and restaurants, however, the coronavirus crisis caused my work to be shut down. Because I hadn’t worked in my place of work for more than 12 weeks I wasn’t entitled to any furlough pay and, like many others, was left stuck with no way of earning money and a very difficult and uncertain time ahead.”

“I have since gained employment as a carer and continue to seek employment in the hospitality industry once again now that things are beginning to open up once more. However, this money genuinely made it possible for me to continue being here and working. Without the money awarded to me from the Student Crisis Support Fund I would not be able to make the commute to work and back each day, so it really has been a life saver from my perspective.”

“I am very thankful to the donors of this money as it has transformed my summer and made things significantly easier. Having received this money and knowing the benefits it has brought to my life, I am very much going to give as I progress through my career. As I begin to earn more, thanks to my wonderful university experience, I too will give in small amounts every month if it means that a student can experience the same rewards I have been fortunate enough to experience. Thank you so much.”

With much uncertainty about the future and the lasting impact of the virus, the University of Liverpool is committed to helping its students now and in the coming months and years. Through the Student Crisis Support Fund, the University aims to ensure that all students are able to complete their studies and achieve their full potential during their time in Liverpool.

We would like to join the student recipients of the COVID-19 Student Crisis Support Fund in thanking all who have donated to the campaign so far. Your gifts are already having a real impact, and will continue to do so for years to come.
