The second annual SotA field trip took place from Tuesday 13th June to Saturday 17th June in Vienna, Austria.

40 SotA students were accompanied by Charlotte Fairclough (Internationalisation & Study Abroad Officer), Charlotte Atkins-Wilson (Learning & Teaching Support Officer), Annarita Magliacane (Lecturer in TESOL) and Eduardo Coutinho (Lecturer in Music Psychology) for the five-day trip which allowed students to meet new people, develop soft skills and discover a new city.

During the trip students engaged in cultural visits to Belvedere Palace, a ‘Made in Vienna’ walking tour which explored the craft and heritage of the city and a historic Tramway tour finishing at Prater park and funfair. Students also attended a Welcome meal at flexitarian restaurant ‘Lets be Frank’ and were given a 5-day travel card to navigate Vienna public transport and received discounted entry at city museums and other places of interest.

Enabling our students to go abroad on a short-term programme effectively contributes to the growth of highly sought soft skills. This is evidenced in the feedback received - 88% (16) of survey respondents cited communication and confidence as the skills most improved upon as a result of the Vienna field trip.

“I am so grateful for being given the opportunity to have been a part of this trip and cannot articulate enough how much I enjoyed it! It was so financially affordable considering how many activities we were able to do. I felt so safe and comfortable the whole time and it's made me feel confident enough to travel in the future. Thank you so much again!”- comments provided by first year English Literature student.

Building on student feedback from both Paris 2022 and Vienna 2023, we are looking ahead to planning our third trip in June 2024.
