Peter Wolf Early Career Symposium 2025: Hydrology in the Community

University of Liverpool & the British Hydrological Society - 28/29th July 2025

The 2025 British Hydrological Society Peter Wolf Early Career Hydrologist’s Symposium will be hosted by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Liverpool in Liverpool from 28 to 29 July 2025

The theme of the 2025 Peter Wolf Symposium is Hydrology in the Community. It will be a valuable opportunity for early career hydrologists across the country to come together and share their recent work on all areas of hydrology. We will also have workshops and keynote talks by those involved in delivering hydrological research in the community.

Registration and Abstract Submission

  • This year the British Hydrological Society have kindly agreed to cover the registration fee for all delegates so there will be NO registration fee however delegates are kindly asked to complete a registration form to allow the organisers to book catering. Delegates will be expected to pay for their travel and subsistence costs.
  • Abstracts should be submitted alongside the registration form.
  • Abstract text - Text must be in English and no longer than 400 words, excluding title, authors, affiliation, figure caption and references. The author presenting the paper at the conference should be indicated using an asterisk (*). 

 

Presentation formats

  • Abstracts: all abstracts (oral and poster) will be compiled and made available to symposium delegates and online
  • Oral presentations: 15 minutes including three minutes for questions. Oral presentations will be given in person. We are looking into the possibility of making pre-recorded presentations available online after the symposium with agreement from the presenters. Details to follow
  • Posters: A1 size poster presentations (either landscape or portrait) will be displayed in person. We are looking into the possibility of making the posters available online after the symposium with agreement from the presenters. Details to follow.

Programme

The full symposium programme will be made available as we get nearer to the symposium.

The symposium will run over two days (Monday 28th and Tuesday 29th July 2025). It will include a mix of oral and poster sessions from the early career delegates, together with an exciting mix of invited keynote speakers and workshops, including:

  • Dr Duncan Faulkner -  President of the British Hydrological Society and Head of Hydrology at JBA Consulting
  • Dr Ben Howard, Research Associate, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Imperial College, London

On the second day, delegates will undertake a walking tour of Liverpool to consider the sustainable urban interventions that have been installed across the city including during the URBAN GreenUP project including the ‘The Strand Connecting Liverpool’ SUDS interventions and the Wapping Dock ecosystem islands.   The walking tour will be led by colleagues responsible for their installation from Liverpool City Council and United Utilities.

Early career delegates will also have the opportunity to take part in two workshops hosted by colleagues from the Flood and Drought Research Infrastructure programme and the University of Liverpool ‘Converse’ project team. Borth workshops will focus on giving participants hands on experience of thinking about working with communities beyond academia.

The symposium will include an evening dinner/social event on Monday 28th July  (food will be included but drinks will be at the expense of the attendees).
