Inaugural Lecture for Professor Katie Atkinson 'Developing AI systems that can argue'
Professor of Computer Science and Dean of the School of Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Computer Science, Katie Atkinson, will deliver her Inaugural Lecture on Thursday 30th March 2023.
Her lecture entitled ‘Developing AI systems that can argue’ will be delivered in the Electrical Engineering & Electronics Lecture Theatre (ELT) at 5 pm and will be followed by a networking reception.
The lecture was originally due to take place in 2020 but was cancelled due to the pandemic. The talk will be the first of multiple lectures taking place in the School of Electrical Engineering, Electronics & Computer Science, as it recommences its inaugural lecture series.
Katie’s research is on the subject of computational models of argument, which is a topic within the general field of artificial intelligence. A key focus within her work is on AI and Law, specifically computational argumentation for modelling legal reasoning.
Externally, Katie is a member of the LawtechUK Panel, a government-backed initiative to help transform the UK legal sector through technology and was President of the International Association for AI and Law in 2016 and 2017. Katie also served on the Computer Science and Informatics sub-panel in the UK Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021.
