STAR-JIA - clinical trial to compare effectiveness of steroid regimens in JIA

NIHR funded randomised clinical trial to compare effectiveness, safety and cost-effectiveness of intravenous versus oral corticosteroid starting doses for children and young people with JIA.

Steroid TreAtment TRial in JIA (STAR-JIA) is a £1M NIHR Health Technology Assessment funded randomised clinical trial to compare effectiveness, safety and cost-effectiveness of intravenous versus oral corticosteroid starting doses for children and young people with juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Co-Investigators are Dr Clare Pain and Prof AV Ramanan, both EATC4Children Associate Directors. The trial is due to open in December 2023, with recruitment taking place in 20 sites across the UK, including those that have not opened to paediatric rheumatology previously. This trial involves a young adult and parent as co-investigators. Associated with the trial will be a biobank which will allow for additional samples to be collected during the trial and also stored for future research. This biobank will be invaluable to further the knowledge of this condition and something that hasn’t been done previously for JIA. The patient and parent co-investigators have been key to development of the trial protocol and ensuring a biobank was included within the study.
