MYOSCOPE – a new patient focused study for juvenile dermatomyositis

A NIHR Research for Patient Benefit study (MYOSCOPE) will bring a visual measure of disease activity into clinical practice to help children with dermatomyositis to understand their disease.

It has been awarded £250k over two years to test a tool (handheld nailfold capillaroscopy, NFC) in clinic that will allow children/young people with dermatomyositis to see small blood vessels at the base of their fingernails to help them understand their disease and the need for any medicine. Through patient / parent questionnaires and interviews it will be explored if this benefits children and young people in clinic and improves their adherence to medication.

MYOSCOPE study will be the first study to allow patients to see their blood vessels in clinic which will hopefully help them to understand their disease and the need for treatment. This study has been guided by patients/parents at all stages of the design process and will continue to be involved.

The study started in September 2023 and will run for two years.
