Two-factor authentication with Duo

As part of our ongoing programme to tackle IT security threats, we use two-factor authentication on all University systems.

What is two-factor authentication?

Two-factor authentication (2FA) provides an additional layer of security beyond a username and password.

It is commonly used for online services such as banking, Microsoft, and Google accounts, and works by having more than one method of confirming your identity. For example, by using a mobile app or text message sent to a trusted number that you have enrolled with the service.

We have partnered with industry experts at Duo Security to implement two-factor authentication.

It is a really simple process to enrol your mobile and to use Duo two-factor authentication to access services. You get the smoothest experience if you download the Duo Mobile app, but you can opt to use SMS text messages if you prefer.

What services use Duo 2FA?

Duo two-factor authentication was first introduced with the Remote Teaching Centre Service in October 2020. It has since been enabled on many services, including CoreHR, Apps Anywhere, the VPN serviceOffice 365, Canvas and Library journals.
